Why Twisted Mallow Company?
The idea of making marshmallows wasn't really my end all game plan. During a visit with my best friend visiting from out of town, I was discussing my desire to retire from my 33 year gig of glorified floss police (yes, I know--aka the floss nag). Between the martinis and laughter I blurted out that I was going to start a s'mores food truck and hand out toothbrushes with each gooey s'more (which made us laugh even harder--can you imagine a dental hygienist pushing sugar?).
That night, however, I got home and for the fun of it looked up a vanilla marshmallow recipe and made a batch--just to see if I could. They were pretty good so I took them to work and they were a hit. I liked the consistency of the marshmallow and how different it was from a store-bought. I began to think about different flavor combinations I liked and experimented. Every batch came out better than the last, and the flavors were raved about at work. And with that I became a mallow maker.
Twisted Mallow Company was a sort of a lighthearted play on words. As one would suspect, mallow is a shortened name for the very popular, and ever-loved tasty marshmallow treat. But the less obvious meaning to me takes me back to my early days growing up in a small NH town. I grew up with the family name of Malouin, which is very French and very much guaranteed to never be pronounced properly. My first day of 9th grade bio class was a reminder of this as the teacher taking roll call mispronounced my name, then to my horror decided I would now be called Miss Mallo, (like the Mallo Cup candy bar, he further explained). All of which wasn't humiliating at all! But, as time passed, my teacher's humorous renaming turned into something endearing that even certain close friends would at times call me.
The idea of "Twisted" comes from a twist on flavor--as simple as the Classic Vanilla Bean to a more select and bold (or dare I say twisted) offering of Mango Chili-Lime or Lemon Lavender. Adding a modern and adventurous touch to something so classic, this is certainly not what you'd ever suspect a marshmallow could be. Pretty twisted, right?
What we've turned this narrative into is one of ordinary treats to symbols of connection, creativity and shared experiences, evoking memories of toasting marshmallows around a campfire with family and friends and feeling "home". We at Twisted Mallow Company want you to connect the image of the classic marshmallow to innovative and creative flavors that conjure up old and new memories, making them more than just a beloved snack, but a pathway for shared experiences and happy feels.
